Walking Meditation
We are aware of the suffering of many beings caught in the present cycle of violence and retribution. We know the roots of violence begin with our own thoughts and actions. The protection of innocent life calls for careful reflection, understanding and compassion, even when anger and fear make this so difficult. Silent walking meditation, a contemplative Buddhist practice of more than 2600 years, will help participants of all faiths and persuasions find the place of compassion and clarity that must be the groundwork of peace.
We will gather at 3:45 and begin walking promptly at 4:00. We walk in silence. We walk together. We walk slowly, following our breath as we inhale and exhale. We give our full attention to the present moment. We are aware of the presence of other walkers. We are aware of our bodies & of the beauty of the natural world. We are aware of our feet touching the earth. We touch the suffering of all beings as we walk. We also touch our joy and nourish the seeds of transformation with our peaceful steps.
A bell will be invited from time to time. When you hear the bell, please stop for a few moments and remember those who have died in the bombings in the U.S. and in Afghanistan. Please stay together so we can end together. We will end where we began, with a circle. Walking is a precious gift. Let us walk with all our hearts.
The Buddhist Peace Fellowship (BPF)
BPF is an international organization founded in 1978 to bring a Buddhist perspective to the peace movement, and to bring the peace movement to the Buddhist community. Its' members seek to practice engagement in the suffering of the world, following the Buddhist precepts. From time to time the Hill Country PBF chapter sponsors walking meditations to raise awareness about social problems.
