Precious Steps for Peace
Walking Meditation

Every 22 minutes someone is killed or maimed by a landmine. Peace
is much more than the absence of war. Peace is only possible when all
beings are free to walk unharmed wherever they wish, when children can
play safely outside, when farmers can work the land free of the danger
of unexploded landmines.
Please join us in a silent Walking
Meditation

Walking Meditation
Walking meditation is an ancient practice which helps us develop compassion
and a more peaceful nature. As we walk, we acknowledge things just as
they are. We give our full attention to the present moment. We are aware
of the presence of other walkers. We are aware of our bodies and of
the beauty of the natural world. We are aware of our feet touching the
earth. We are aware that millions of people cannot walk safely because
of landmines. We walk to witness, the suffering caused by senseless
war and hidden landmines. We will gather at 3:00 at the south steps
of the capital and begin walking along the Great Walk at the sound of
a small bell. We walk in silence. We walk together staying close to
each other. We walk slowly, following our breath as we inhale/exhale.
A bell will be invited from time to time. When you hear the bell, please
stop for a few moments to remember those who have died or been injured
by landmines. Please stay together so we can end together. We will end
where we began with a circle. Walking is a precious gift. Walk with
all your heart for those who can't.
Austin Adopt-a-Minefield Campaign
The Austin Adopt-A-Minefield Campaign is a 4-month project of the local
chapter of the United Nations Association of the United States. The
campaign, a global citizens' effort, gives safe communities like ours
the opportunity to help endangered sister communities rid themselves
of landmines. By adopting and raising funds to clear a minefield in
the village of Praca in Bosnia-Herzegovina, citizens of Austin will
help save lives and give hope to a people who desperately need to return
to their homes. Help clear a path to a safer world! The goal of the
Austin Campaign is to raise $50,000 to clear the landmines in Praca.
With your help we can do it! If you would like more information, contact

The Campaign is available to make presentations to your group.
